Holidays in Santorini
The holiday island of Santorini belongs to the Cycladic group of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. Known as Calliste (most beautiful) in ancient Greek, Santorini is an island of spectacular scenery formed by the constant eruptions of a now dormant volcano thought to be the source of the legend of Atlantis. Holidays to this idyllic island are ideal for families and couples looking for a relaxing Greece holiday in the sun whilst even those looking for a lively nightlife will find it there. Santorini is a cosmopolitan island with a fantastic mixture of traditional architecture and modern facilities and has something to offer even the most discerning traveller.
Santorini hotels, Greece, are located in the traditional villages and in the beach resorts. The traditional white painted villages are perched on the edge of impressive cliffs that are hundreds of metres high and are facing the submerged volcano and the spectacular sunset. Some hotels in Santorini Greece are also located in the beach resorts like Kamari or Perissa. Relax whilst the professional and attentive staff do their best to make sure that you have the holiday of a lifetime on the beautiful Greek island of Santorini.
Thira, the capital with its winding narrow streets, arcades and whitewashed houses, is perched precariously above towering cliffs overlooking a crystal sea. Traditional tavernas and souvenir shops selling pumice, the islands main export, abound and help create an atmosphere unique to the town.
Visitors wishing to explore the island will find Santorini has a wealth of ancient sites set in the most beautiful surroundings. Of particular note is the village of Akrotiri, where excavations have revealed a Minoan city just as it stood until its burial under volcanic debris. The city (still being excavated) consisted of large, well-built multi story houses, which contain some of the finest Minoan frescoes to be found in the Mediterranean. Also unmistakably unique to the island are the spectacular black sand volcanic beaches with their sheer mountain backdrop.
Due to the hilly nature of the island, Santorini is not an ideal location for those with walking difficulties, the elderly or the infirm.
